Dodge Challenger Review

The 5-passenger, 2-door 2017 Dodge Challenger combines classic muscle car styling with modern technology and safety features. In this 2017 Dodge Challenger review of a car from Earnhardt Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram—which serves the Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert areas—buyers can learn more about this modern muscle machine.

New For 2017

For this model year, there are several new trims on the Dodge Challenger, including the all-wheel drive GT, which is the first ever AWD Challenger trim. The system is matched to the standard 3.6L V6, and prices start just north of $34,000.

Dodge Challenger Review: Behind the Wheel

The Dodge Challenger is a pretty capable sports car. The entry-level 3.6L Pentastar® V6 generates enough power to keep motorists happy with its performance. This engine delivers 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. The next level up features the 5.7L HEMI® V8 engine, packing a formidable punch of 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.

All versions of the 2017 Dodge Challenger drive excellently, with sufficient power, great handling, and ample comfort. However, the SRT® Hellcat and its supercharged 6.2L HEMI® SRT® V8 engine is beyond words, as its acceleration can't safely (or legally) be fully experienced on public roads, clocking in a ferocious 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. A good middle ground is the 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque generated by the 392 HEMI® V8 engine featured with the R/T Scat Pack. It provides the ideal combination of power, price, and drivability.

Uconnect® & Media in the Dodge Challenger

The Uconnect® system in the Challenger is one of the best available infotainment systems, and the newest generation is also one of the simplest to use. The 5-inch screen comes standard and allows drivers to easily access their entertainment features. The upgraded system's 8.4-inch screen allows for intuitive, phone-style navigation, and maps are provided by Garmin. Bluetooth® works quickly and seamlessly to connect a driver's phone to this great audio and navigation system. The vehicle includes a radio and a media hub that consists of an auxiliary input, a USB port, and even an SD card reader that allows you to transport your library on removable SD cards.

Dodge Challenger Interior

On the inside, the new Challenger is functional, comfortable, and pleasant. At the center of the instrument cluster is the touchscreen that reviewers have liked in other Chrysler and Dodge vehicles, as well as some retro gauges that work well with the car's overall design and classic muscle car aesthetic. There's ample room in front, and enough room for three in the back, which isn't usually common with many other muscle car manufacturers.

Dodge Challenger Review: Exterior

Its short-deck/long-hood styling harkens back to the Challenger models of the early ‘70s, and additional details such as badging, stripes, and hood scoops give the new Challenger an undeniable family resemblance. From beginning to end, the Challenger offers a visual representation of an untamed beast in a stylish and alluring package. This vehicle can turn heads with its appearance, as well as its performance.
