2013 Toyota Sienna vs 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan

Automotive writers don't agree on everything but most would not object to rating the Dodge Grand Caravan as America's favorite minivan. There are several good reasons. Between Dodge's Caravan and its up-market cousin Chrysler Town & Country, the pair sold nearly half of the entire US minivan market in 2012.  Bit trying to take a bite out of that market is one of the few minivans still around: the 2013 Toyota Sienna, according to Toyota officials. When talking about minivan performance, the subject is usually highway merging and off-the-line acceleration. But Toyota's engineers have  Toyota's gone out of its way to breed an SE edition of its latest Sienna, specifically to appeal to people who have to have a minivan, but don't want to give up entirely on driving excitement. To do that, the Sienna this year gave up its former four-cylinder option. It had the advantage of keeping the price down. But this year, only the 3.5-liter V-6 and its 266 horsepower is the only engine offered. With a six-speed automatic it offers strong acceleration. Handling is safe and predictable.

2013 Toyota Sienna Power & Handling

Like acceleration, few buyers of minivans select their models with strong marks for style. But Toyota has made an effort to give the vehicle at least a modern and clean look. The front end has a stylish look, for one small example. Standard features include curtain airbags and stability control, and a rearview camera and Bluetooth are available, and blind-spot monitors are now standard on upper trims. All Siennas come with dual sliding side doors; power windows, locks and mirrors; cruise control; a CD player and aux jack; a tilt/telescoping steering wheel; and three-zone climate control. Upscale versions add a power tailgate and power sliding side doors; steering-wheel audio controls; leather upholstery; heated front seats; a dual sunroof; and a huge 16.4-inch-wide LCD screen and a DVD player to keep the two back rows of passengers entertained.

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Power & Handling

Dodge minivans have changed this year. All Grand Caravans sport Dodge's latest V-6 engine, a 3.6-liter unit that produces 283 horsepower. Dubbed the Pentastar, after the company's brand mark, the engine feels responsive (even at torque at low and mid-range speeds), according to reports by auto writers who have test driven it. The six-speed transmission is relatively smooth. Handling is nothing remarkable but it's just as good and possibly even better than most of its competitors

Design of a 2013 Sienna

The latest Toyota design theme defines the Sienna's interior with a wide, sweeping arc that splits the cockpit filled with controls and gauges, and a passenger zone with secondary knobs and buttons to govern ancillaries like climate control and audio. If anything it amplifies the sense of space inside the Sienna, as do slimmer seats and a thinner dash, Toyota says.

Design of a 2013 Grand Caravan

The least expensive Grand Caravan is the AVP, a special $19,995 "American Value Package" with power windows, locks, and mirrors; a removable second-row bench seat and in-floor storage bins, but no fold-away second-row seats; a fold-away third-row seat; cruise control; air conditioning; and keyless entry.. Mid-grade minivans contain more standard features, including a power tailgate and power side doors, and upgrades for audio systems. The Crew edition gains satellite radio, a power driver seat, and ambient interior lighting. There's a vaguely sporty R/T model with monochromatic trim and black leather seating. On the options list, the Grand Caravan lists some truly useful features that will be gleefully welcomed by families. There's a USB port for 3G dongles that transforms the Grand Caravan into a WiFi hotspot. However, high-definition families might be swayed by a new Blu-Ray DVD entertainment system for 2013, offered on Crew and R/T models. It includes an HDMI input, a 115-volt outlet and two USB ports for gaming and recharging electronics. Other features to check out are navigation; Bluetooth (either bundled with an upgraded radio, or an auto-dimming rearview mirror, or heated seats and steering wheel); the DVD entertainment system; and a power package for the side doors, tailgate and pedals on models where they're not included.

Conclusions

The very functional Dodge Grand Caravan and the Toyota Sienna both rank high for safety features. The Dodge may have the best seating and infotainment features found in any minivan. But the Toyota Sienna is perhaps superior for more lead-footed drivers who want instant power. The later is bereft of its Chrysler cousin's minivan's ultimate features. And it costs several thousand dollars more.
